2022 Takes on Weed Science: Interview with Dr. Rodrigo Werle & Dr. Glen Obear

Watch the interview with Dr. Rodrigo Werle and Dr. Glen Obear below and listen to their ‘2022 Takes on Weed Science’. Rodrigo Werle, Assistant Professor & Extension Weed Scientist at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and Glen Obear, Director of Research, Development, and Innovation at Exacto, share their unique perspective.

For further context, the weed science program at the UW-Madison Extension (“WiscWeeds”) focuses on weed management in corn and soybean production systems. The researchers work closely with the ag industry, consultants, and growers on applied science to finetune weed management practices.

The forefront topics of their research are herbicide-resistant weeds and their changing resistance to different chemicals. Some of the weeds that receive much attention are waterhemp, giant ragweed, horseweed (also known as marestail), and fall panicum.

The second focus area is cover-crop research derived from the soil health movement and growing interest in carbon markets. Cover crops impact herbicides’ effectiveness, and herbicides impact cover crops’ success.

Integrated weed management strategies are the third focus area of the WiscWeeds program. The increasing resistance to herbicides is limiting available management options. The WiscWeeds program is looking into integrated management strategies from cover crops to targeted applications and the effect of adjuvants in weed management programs.

If you are curious to learn more, listen to Rodrigo Werle highlight the latest research findings to take into consideration and the potential challenges we might face in the near future.
